LB Kitchen Jumps into the Mix at Cooking for Community

On June 1, LB Kitchen joined the Cooking for Community family, providing 150 meals to Wayside Food Programs, bringing to a close their first week with us. Well, not exactly.

When Cooking for Community was alerted seven immigrant families had suddenly been quarantined because of the coronavirus and needed warm meals, LB Kitchen stepped up. That Sunday, they were able to prepare 27 culturally appropriate meals for the families, which was surely a source of comfort in a stressful situation. This flexibility and ability to respond quickly fit perfectly with Cooking for Community’s mission.

“I think this moment teaches us that there there’s no such thing as food security,” says Bryna Gootkind, who, along with her partner, Lee Farrington, own LB Kitchen.

She notes how shaky things are in the entire food realm in general right now and how grateful LB Kitchen is to be receiving support from Cooking for Community. She adds, “If Lee had her way, we’d actually give all the food we make away for free to underserved/less privileged communities.”

Gootkind says our funding allows them to help their neighbors, support their local suppliers/growers when possible, and “get paid a little too. This is win-win for us.”
